Farris El-Saie was crowned England Youth Champion among boys in the highly competitive under-11 age grouping, battling it out among 40 fencers for the gold medal and the coveted EYC title. The EYC is the premier event of the season for England Fencing, and saw several hundred young athletes compete at the Hertfordshire Sports Village in Hatfield June 16-17.

“I was nervous and excited,” Farris said. “My biggest challenge was preparing for the final fight, but my best moment was scoring the last touch. It was just an amazing feeling!”

Among ZFW’s young women, Amelie Tsang also achieved the podium, securing a hard-fought victory for a silver medal in the under-13 age grouping. Tsang competed among 42 fencers in that category.

Clubmate Dylan Daniel also fought his way to a silver medal among boys under the age of 15, in a category where 63 fencers came en garde at the start of the day. Other podium performances included David Sosnov, who also secured silver among 80 combatants in the under-13 age group. Close behind, battling to bronze in the same category, was clubmate Tomi Fric.

“It was a good show from ZFW warriors in the EYC this year,” said chief coach and ZFW club founder Ziemek Wojciechowski. “We are always searching for better ways to foster the massive talent we’ve got at the club. This is possible thanks to a great coaching team and fantastic parents working tirelessly behind the scenes.”

Also noteworthy were performances from: Victoria Amore, who finished fifth in the under-11 girls grouping among 30 fencers; Valentins Abramenkovs, who finished sixth in the under-11 boy; and Leo Li Lim, who ended eighth in under-13s.

Elsewhere, among the club’s senior fencers, GB Olympian Richard Kruse, age 34, retained his title in May as champion of the Shanghai Grand Prix in China, beating Russian fencer Timur Safin 15-13 in the gold medal match.

The Senior European Championships followed soon after, in Novi Sad, Serbia, where Kruse finished in ninth place after being eliminated by seasoned Italian competitor Giorgio Avola. Alexander Choupenitch, who fences for the Czech Republic and trains with Wojciechowski, won a bronze medal in the competition. The senior fencers will next be on piste at the world championships, which are being held from July 19 to 27 in Wuxi, China.

ZFW is run by Olympic Coach Ziemek Wojciechowski with a team of dedicated experts. The club aims to boost the standard of fencing in Britain by providing a centre of excellence for elite fencers training for Olympic, international and national teams. It also provides a learning programme with an emphasis on youngsters. ZFW operates from various venues in North London and elsewhere around the capital.
